Make a Meaningful Impact in Someone’s Life
Are you compassionate, empathetic, reliable, and someone who genuinely enjoys being active and outdoors?
Do you like walking, exploring, staying healthy, and spending time with people? Are you looking for work where you can make a real difference in someone's life?
How Can We Help? is looking for caring, value-driven individuals to join our team as Companion Care Providers.
About the Role
Being a Companion with How Can We Help is about much more than sitting beside someone.
We believe seniors should continue to enjoy life, stay connected to their communities, get outdoors, remain active, and do the things they enjoy for as long as possible.
Our Companions take clients on walks, outings, errands, appointments, nature adventures, golf, social activities and local events. Some days may involve exploring the Comox Valley, while other adventures may take us further afield.
Our seniors can be surprisingly fit and active, so you need to be able to keep up with them! If you enjoy walking, being outdoors and living an active, healthy lifestyle, this role may be a particularly good fit for you.
We are also a transportation-based service, so safe and reliable driving is an important part of the job. Companions drive seniors to appointments, errands, social outings and activities, and accompany them throughout these experiences.
Company vehicles are provided for shifts. You will, however, need reliable transportation to and from your scheduled shifts.
Our clients rely on us, and our team relies on each other. Reliability and punctuality are essential. When you are scheduled to work, a senior may be waiting for you, an appointment may depend on you, and another team member may be depending on you to arrive on time.
This is not a role for someone who frequently cancels, arrives late or is unreliable.
What You May Be Doing
Your day could look very different from one shift to the next. You may:
Take a senior for a walk or outdoor adventure
Accompany clients to golf, activities, appointments and social outings
Drive clients safely to appointments, errands and activities
Help with grocery shopping and other errands
Spend time talking, laughing and building genuine relationships
Support clients in maintaining independence and staying connected to their community
Assist with daily living activities where required
Prepare meals and assist with feeding where appropriate
Provide light housekeeping and laundry
Assist with mobility and transfers, including heavier physical assistance when required
Engage clients in activities that encourage mental stimulation and social connection
Support individuals living with dementia or other cognitive changes
Follow care plans while respecting each person's preferences, dignity and independence
Notice and report changes or concerns to the appropriate family member or healthcare professional
