He gets his hockey fix. You get a little time to yourself. And everyone gets something to look forward to!
Who says a little cognitive decline should mean giving up the things you love?
For many older gentlemen, a Saturday night at the hockey is still a pretty exciting prospect. The atmosphere, the roar of the crowd, the anticipation of a goal, a good chat about the game and perhaps a little friendly debate about the referee! Some things never lose their appeal.
At How Can We Help, we believe that enjoying life, getting out into the community and having something special on the calendar shouldn't stop simply because someone needs a little extra support.
That's why we've created our Saturday Night Hockey Outings, especially for senior gentlemen who would love to enjoy a night at the arena with the right support around them.
A proper night out, with all the details taken care of!
Every Saturday evening, we take a group of senior gentlemen out to enjoy a hockey game at the arena.
And we've put a little thought into making the experience as comfortable and straightforward as possible.
We have privately prearranged seating behind the goal nets, with protective glass, so the gentlemen can enjoy the action from a great vantage point.
We've also arranged access through the rear entrance, with elevator facilities. This means avoiding the busy main entrances and having to navigate through large crowds.
And, of course, there's a team of caregivers on hand throughout the evening.
We've even thought about those little practical details that can make all the difference. Our caregivers use a two-way radio system to coordinate assistance, including when someone needs a little help getting to the washroom.
It's all about making sure the gentlemen can relax, enjoy themselves and concentrate on the hockey!
It's not just about the hockey!
While the game is certainly the main attraction, there's so much more to a Saturday night out.
It's about getting dressed and ready to go somewhere. It's about conversation, laughter, familiar faces and being part of something happening in the community.
It's about having a reason to look forward to Saturday.
For someone experiencing cognitive challenges, opportunities to enjoy familiar interests and social activities can be especially meaningful. Having the right companionship and support can make getting out and about much easier.
And let's be honest, a little hockey banter never hurts!
A little respite for the people who care
We also know that behind many gentlemen who need extra support is a wife, partner or family caregiver who spends much of their time looking after someone they love.
Being a caregiver can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also be demanding. Sometimes you need a few hours to yourself without worrying about whether everything is taken care of.
Perhaps you'd like to catch up with friends, enjoy a quiet evening, go out for dinner, or simply put your feet up and enjoy a little peace and quiet.
Our Saturday Night Hockey outings offer an opportunity for just that.
While your gentleman enjoys his evening at the arena with our team, you can enjoy some well-deserved breathing space.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with taking a little time for yourself. In fact, looking after yourself is an important part of being able to continue looking after someone else.
The Saturday night details
Here's how it works:
Every Saturday evening: A group outing to enjoy a live hockey game.
5:30 pm: Home pick-up.
During the game: Prearranged seating, dedicated access and caregiver support throughout.
9:30 pm: Return home.
We take care of the arrangements so that the evening can be about what it should be: enjoying the game!
A few spaces still available!
We have a limited number of spaces available for our Saturday Night Hockey outings, and we'd love to hear from families who think this could be just the thing for their father, grandfather, husband or loved one.
You don't have to give up the things you enjoy just because a little extra support is needed.
Sometimes all it takes is the right company, a little planning and someone who understands how to make an outing enjoyable.
Let's keep Saturday nights interesting!
