A Day Out in Campbell River: Adventure, Laughter and Chainsaw Carvings

Sometimes You Just Need to Get Out and See Something New

One of the things we love most about what we do at How Can We Help is seeing our seniors genuinely enjoy themselves.

Recently, we packed up and headed to Campbell River for a group outing to see the amazing chainsaw carvings around the city. It was one of those days where the outing itself was only part of the fun. There was plenty of talking, laughing, looking at the incredible carvings and enjoying being out together.

These are the days that remind us why meaningful companionship matters so much.

We Don't Believe in Sitting Around Waiting for Life to Happen

Getting older shouldn't mean that your world becomes smaller.

Our seniors still want to get out. They want to see things, meet people, have a coffee, explore somewhere new and sometimes just do something they haven't done before.

That's why our companions are always looking for new things to do and new places to explore. We aren't interested in providing companionship that simply means sitting in someone's home for a few hours.

We want our seniors to have things to look forward to.

A trip to Campbell River to see the chainsaw carvings is a great example. It wasn't something complicated or extravagant. It was simply a group of people getting together, heading out for the day and enjoying an experience they may not otherwise have had.

And that's what makes the day worthwhile.

What Makes How Can We Help Different?

We often hear the word "companionship" used, but companionship can mean very different things.

For us, it means getting to know the person we're spending time with and finding ways to make their day more enjoyable.

It might be taking someone for a walk along the water, going out for lunch, attending a local event, heading into Campbell River for an outing, helping with errands or simply getting out of the house for a change of scenery.

Our companions aren't there just to fill time. They are there to take part in life with our seniors.

That's an important difference.

We want the people we support to feel that they are still part of their community and that there are still plenty of enjoyable things ahead of them.

Every Week Can Bring Something New

One of the best things about working with seniors is that no two weeks have to look the same.

There are always places we haven't been, things we haven't seen and little adventures waiting to happen.

That might mean exploring somewhere in the Comox Valley, taking a drive to Campbell River, enjoying one of Vancouver Island's beautiful outdoor spaces or finding a local event that sounds like fun.

We don't think seniors should have to give up adventure just because they are getting older.

In fact, we think having something to look forward to can make all the difference.

For Families Who Can't Always Be There

We know that many families have parents or loved ones living in the Comox Valley while they themselves live somewhere else.

Maybe you're in Victoria, Vancouver, Alberta, Ontario or another part of Canada. You may be calling regularly and doing everything you can from a distance, but you can't always be the person who takes Mum out for the afternoon or gets Dad out of the house for a change of scenery.

That's where we can help.

Our companions can step in and provide the time, company and support that families sometimes can't provide from a distance.

We don't replace family. We simply become another caring person in your loved one's corner.

And we do it with heart.

Seniors Deserve to Keep Enjoying Life

The Campbell River outing wasn't really about chainsaw carvings.

It was about getting out of the house. It was about spending time together, having a laugh, seeing something interesting and coming home with another good memory.

Those things matter.

Whether someone is living independently, needs a little extra support getting around or is experiencing significant cognitive decline, there can still be opportunities for meaningful experiences and enjoyable days.

Sometimes it just takes the right person beside them to make it possible.

How Can We Help Companion Services

We are based in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, and provide senior companionship, transportation, respite support and senior outings throughout the area.

Our approach is simple. We take the time to get to know the people we support, we find out what they enjoy, and we look for ways to help them keep doing those things.

Because we don't think life stops being interesting when you get older.

There are still places to go, people to meet, stories to tell and plenty of things worth getting out of the house for.

Your Family May Be Far Away. We'll Be Here With Heart.

That's what How Can We Help is all about.

Helping seniors keep living full, interesting and meaningful lives, while giving families the reassurance that someone caring is there when they can't be.

And as for where our next adventure will take us?

Well, you'll have to watch this space.
